Poquoson and Bethel Manor Elementary Win Big at Great Computer Challenge
By Nancy E. Sheppard

PBME imageTeams from Poquoson Elementary and York County’s Bethel Manor Elementary traveled to Old Dominion University to compete in the 33rd Annual Great Computer Challenge on Saturday, May 12. This event, sponsored by WHRO, Old Dominion University, and the Consortium for Interactive Instruction, hosted teams from regional K-12 schools who competed in computer-based challenges.

Poquoson Elementary won three Spirit Awards and placed second in both Graphic Design Level 2 and Desktop Presentation. Bethel Manor Elementary’s STEM Club placed second in both Graphic Design Level 2 and Visual Programming/Block Coding Level 2, as well as third in Desktop Publishing Level 2. Both schools performed impressively against competition from Isle of Wight County, Gloucester, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

The Great Computer Challenge has become a focal point for local elementary school children to get engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematical (STEM)-related fields through the spirit of friendly competition in an innovative forum. The event culminated with an awards ceremony in a room of anxious children, excitedly waiting to hear their names called for their day of hard work. The more than 100 staff and volunteers made sure that no matter who won awards, each student walked away feeling like a winner for having participated in this fun and engaging event.
