York County Parks and Recreation Encourages You to Get Outdoors This Spring

York County Parks and Recreation offers a variety of fun and exciting activities for you this spring, including…

Volunteers are needed to help expand New Quarter Park’s Butterfly Habitat area on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The park with partner with the Virginia Master Naturalist Historic Rivers Chapter to plant wildflowers and remove invasive plants. We need volunteers of all ages to register for this project! Thanks to a large turnout last year, over 300 plants were put in the ground, much to the delight of the butterflies. The park saw an increase in butterflies, especially Monarch Butterflies, and we hope the expansion project helps that trend to continue. Because of the effort, the habitat has been officially sanctions as a Monarch Watch Way Station by the national non-profit Monarch Watch! Volunteers are asked to register at www.yorkcounty.gov/pa rksandrec. Our first Mixed Doubles Pickleball League begins May 7 and is held every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Back Creek Park, 3000 Goodwin Neck Road. The season ends June 25th with a single elimination tournament for the top four teams. At least one male and one female are required for all teams. Cost is $40 per registered two or four member team. Individuals not on a team but wishing to be included in a two or four member team may register for $15. Register now at www.yorkcounty. gov/parksandrec or in person at Back Creek Park or the Parks and Recreation Office (100 County Drive).

From May 1 through October 1, York County offers kayak rentals at Back Creek Park and New Quarter Park. You must be at least 13 years old to use a kayak and must be at least 18 years old to rent one. Rental period is for two hour blocks or all day. Rental cost is $10 (residents) or $12 (non-resident) for two hours; $30 (resident) or $35 (non-resident) for all day. In addition, Parks and Recreation is offering two kayaking trips:

Sunset Kayak Tour – Introduction to kayaking with a short safety/paddling demonstration followed by a sunset excursion out of Back Creek Park or New Quarter Park. Only six spots available per date. Participants must be at least 13 years old (13-17 must be accompanied by an adult). Cost is $30 per person. Back Creek Park dates: May 17, June 14 & 28, July 12 & 26, August 9 & 23, September 13 & 27. New Quarter Park dates: May 30, September 5, October 3

Goodwin Island Kayak Expedition – This is an advanced kayaker day trip where participants will travel in a guided group and explore Goodwin Island and learn more about the Chesapeake Bay. Only six spots available per date. Participants must be at least 13 years old (13-17 must be accompanied by an adult). Cost is $60 per person. Dates: May 4, June 8, July 13, August 10
