York County and Poquoson Weekly Sports Recap
Submitted by John Hamilton

Recap 4apr imageThey say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Well, the track and field season has moved from indoors to outdoors, and this weekend it looks like our very own Grafton High School came to compete like lions! The boys visited Todd Stadium and ran away with the First Place Trophy, and the girls brought home the Second Place Trophy.

In baseball action, Tabb won its second straight game to start the season, defeating Warhill on the road 13-8 on Friday, March 29th. The girls softball team traveled all the way out west to Petersburg on Wednesday, 3/20 and were rewarded with a major 27-0 win. However, on Thursday, 3/28 their high-octane offense was contained, and they lost at Warhill 3-0. The York boys had a rough threeday stretch, losing to Lafayette 2-1, Smithfield 3-1, and Jamestown 10-3. They are now 0-5 on the season. However, the girls defeated Lafayette 7-1 and Jamestown 11-1 to move to a 3-1 record. Grafton hosted Bruton on Thursday and powered its way to a 13-1 victory, and now boasts a 4-0 record. That same day the girls also hosted Bruton and displayed lots of power, winning by a 21-1 count. The previous night they hosted Menchville and won 4-3, and the night before that they hosted New Kent but lost 4-2. They now have an impressive 5-1 record. In addition to their Grafton losses, the Bruton boys lost 6-1 to Jamestown at home on Wednesday, and the girls hosted the same school and lost 16-0. The Poquoson boys traveled to Smithfield on Friday and secured the 8-5 victory.

On Monday, 3/25 the Tabb girls soccer squad visited Lakeland in Suffolk and kicked its way to a solid 3-0 victory, moving to 3-1 on the season. On Monday Hopewell drove a long way to visit York, but their girls lost 10-0 to the home team. Incredibly, on Thursday York scored even more goals, defeating visiting Heritage 13-0. They are now 5-0-1 on the year, and their low-scoring 1-1 tie to start the season against Menchville now seems like a distant memory. The Bruton girls soccer team traveled all the way to King William on Wednesday, but lost 4- 1. The next night the boys squad hosted Menchville and lost 6-0. The Summit Christian Academy girls played to a 3-3 tie on Friday, 3/22 at Gateway Christian in Virginia Beach. The next Friday they hosted the other SCA, also known as Suffolk Christian Academy, but lost in a close 4-3 tussle. On Thursday the Poquoson girls lost a tight defensive contest 1-0 to Menchville.

In tennis news, the Tabb boys split a pair. On Thursday they hosted Churchland of Portsmouth and won 9-0, but the very next night they visited York and lost 9-0.The girls had a similar experience. On Thursday they visited Churchland and won 8-1, but the very next night they hosted York and also lost 9-0. In addition to their Tabb win, the York girls also tied host First Colonial of Virginia Beach on Monday 2-2, and defeated host Smithfield on Tuesday 6-3. Strangely, in addition to their victory over Tabb, the York boys also tied host First Colonial on Monday, although by a 3-3 tally. And like the girls, Tuesday they contested Smithfield and also won 6-3. The Grafton girls beat Warwick 7-2, lost to Jamestown 9-0, and lost to Poquoson 5-4. However, over four days the boys defeated Warwick, Jamestown, and Poquoson to move to a stellar 5-0 on the year. Lastly, the Bruton girls lost to Warhill and New Kent to fall to 0-5 on the season, but the boys defeated the same two schools to improve to 4-1 on the year.
