York County to Celebrate Earth Day With Earth-Friendly Events
Submitted by Gail Whittaker

YEarth imageEarth Day is Monday, April 22. To honor this occasion, York County's Department of Public Works and the County's Beautification Committee, are holding a series of earth-friendly events. For additional information, visit www.yorkcounty.gov/dpw or call (757) 890-3750.

Saturday, April 20
Got Tires? They make a perfect mosquito breeding place, so bring your used tires to our Tire Recycling Event at the Public Works Complex, 105 Service Drive (off Goodwin Neck Road). Mosquito Control will be on site from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for free drop off of up to five tires (on or off the rim). Don't forget to ask about yard inspections, and find out how getting rid of standing water (in tires, bird baths, even tarps!) can help fight the bite.

Monday, April 22 (Earth Day!)
Join us as the York County Beautification Committee and York River Academy Greenhouse Team break ground on the York County Demonstration Garden at the Waste Management Center, 145 Goodwin Neck Road, at 12:30 p.m. Designed by the York River Academy Greenhouse Team, the garden is being planted and maintained by the students (with support from staff of the Waste Management Center) and includes plants native to our area that support local ecosystems. A combination of flowers and shrubs, all supportive of important pollinators, are planned for this space.

Saturday, April 27
Drug Take Back, Shred Event, Plastic Bag Recycling, and Food Drive, ALL IN ONE! The Sheriff's Office D.A.R.E. program is partnering with the Department of Justice for a prescription drug take back. Bring in your unused/unnecessary pills, patches, or liquids for a no-questionsasked drop off. We want to keep these drugs off the streets and reduce the risk of theft and increase personal safety! While you're there, bring in your personal papers for free shredding services, your plastic bags for recycling, and nonperishable food items for the Peninsula Food Bank.
