Winners of Peninsula Fine Arts’ "Prefaces 2019”

NEWPORT NEWS – The Peninsula Fine Arts Center recognized 12 high school students for artworks exhibited in "Prefaces 2019" at an awards reception Sunday.

"Prefaces 2019" includes 60 artworks from students attending 13 Peninsula high schools. The works were selected by juror Edward A. Obermeyer, artist and retired Art Teacher, from nearly 300 entries. The exhibition is on display until May 26. Twenty-one works are available for purchase.

Awards for Best in Show and first through fourth places are given by the Tidewater Chapter of The Society, Inc. The winners are:
  • Best in Show, $300: Maddie Nerenberg, Jamestown High School. "A Spoon Full of Sugar," colored pencil.
  • First Place, $250: Derick Miracle, Woodside High School. "Sunset Arches," digital photograph.
  • Second Place, $200: Stuart Beach, Lafayette High School. "Morning Star," fabric.
  • Third Place, $150: Mason Shell, Warhill High School. "Boxed Up,"charcoal.
  • Fourth Place, $100: Ethan Hopson, Hampton Roads Academy." Dueling Peaks" clay.
  • Honorable Mention:
    • Haley Hudgins, Poquson High School. "Walk in My Shoes,"oil.
    • August Kolvalcik, Peninsula Catholic High School. "Nights Light," acrylic.
    • Dama Morrison, Warhill High School. "Noir," collage and charcoal.
    • Alicia Santos, Tabb High School. "Decay," Ink.
    • Mariella Smith, Jamestown High School."Engima", white pencil.
    • Ilena Taylor, Woodside High School, "Frail", ink.
    • Jennifer Tisdale, Jamestown High School, "Big Blue", mixed media.
The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is located at 101 Museum Drive within Mariners' Museum Park in Newport News, Va. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays; PFAC is closed on Mondays. Admission will be $1 for adults and for children (ages 6-12) and free for children 5 and under from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
