Food Tasting Event Returns with a Steampunk Twist
Submitted by Jenna Dill

SPTwist imageNEWPORT NEWS, VA — Back for its fifth year, top restaurants and caterers in Hampton Roads will compete in a food-tasting event of historic proportions at The Mariners' Museum and Park. History Bites takes place on Saturday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m., and is a part of the annual Battle of Hampton Roads Weekend happening March 9-11, 2018.

The event will feature more than 20 handcrafted dishes, and has a Steampunk theme this year. Guests are encouraged to dress to the nines in their most creative steampunk clothing and accessories. The theme plays into the overall theme for Battle of Hampton Roads Weekend, which is "Modern Marvels: Technology in the Civil War." Guests may also come in casual dress.

Celebrity judges will award the coveted Cast iron Skillet prize in the following categories: Best Presentation, Best Overall, and Best Culinary School. Judges will include Abe Lincoln (portrayed by interpreter George Buss), local foodie, Patrick Evans-Hylton, Ironclad Chef Eric Jenneret, Publisher/Editor of Veer Magazine Jeff Maisey, and Mariners' Museum Educator and Ironclad Chef, Wisteria Perry. Event attendees will also vote for winners of the People's Choice awards.

Planned dishes include: New England Clam Chowder, Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo, Pepper Pot, Oyster Rockefeller, Shrimp Wiggle, Boston Pork, Seafood Puff Pastry, Mulligatawny Soup, Oatlands Corn Pudding, Loudon County Oyster Soup, Washington Cake, Gingerbread, Fried Apples, Boston Cream Pie, and much more.

New to the menu this year are two Civil War-era specialty drinks: Cherry Bounce and Lemon Punch. Cherry Bounce is made of cherries, sugar, bourbon, and cinnamon, while Barbados Lemon Punch includes lemons, sugar, brandy, and rum. Ironclad Distillery is this year's drink sponsor.

Participating restaurants and caterers include the following:
  • The Art Institute of Virginia Beach
  • The Catering Company of Williamsburg
  • The Chamberlin
  • Chef by Design Catering
  • Creative Catering of Virginia
  • Culinary Institute of VA
  • Custom Culinary Connections
  • Encore Catering
  • Ms. Mary's Catering
  • Smoke BBQ
  • Stratford University
Tickets are $35 in advance and $45 the day of the event. Museum Members receive $5 off tickets purchased in advance. Tickets include unlimited tastings from all participants and one drink ticket. A cash bar will be available, offering beer, wine, and other specialty drinks of the Civil War era.  Tickets can be purchased at BattleofHamptonRoads.com.  Advanced ticket purchases are recommended, as this event sells out every year.
