County of the Future Essay Contest Winners
Submitted by Gail Whittaker

CFEC imageThe York County Public Library is proud to announce the winners of the 2nd Annual County of the Future Essay Contest. The contest drew 32 entries from York County middle school students.

"We’d like to thank all the students that participated,” said Kevin Smith, Director of Library Services. "I was truly impressed with their vision for the future of York County. There were so many great essays that we chose two winners.”

This year’s winners are eighth-grader Lauren Vaillancourt and seventh-grader Diane Hoffman. Both students attend Grafton Middle School. They were recognized on May 2 by Neil Morgan, York County Administrator, and Victor Shandor, York County School Division Superintendent. Each winner received a certificate of excellence, a Kindle Fire HD, and a York County swag bag. Their winning essays are published on the library’s website, www.yorkcounty.gov/library.

The County of the Future Essay Contest is in honor of Local Government Education Week. It is sponsored by the York County Public Library and York County Administration. The contest challenges middle school students to explore their vision of York County 50 years in the future and offer advice to the County Administrator on how to prepare for the changes. The contest was open to all York County middle school students.
