What a week it was for our local schools in the state tournaments!

The Poquoson wrestling dynasty continued, as the squad repeated as State Champions and won the 11th title in school history. Brett Poultney won at 113 pounds, Cole McCormick won at 120 pounds, and Karon Smith won at 106 pounds.

York High also had a great weekend on the mats. John Michael Cassidy is your new 3A State Champion at 195 pounds, and the team finished in an impressive 5th place in the state championships.

In the pool, the York High girls team just missed becoming State Champions by 10 points to Western Albemarle, proudly finishing in 2nd place. The boys also finished as runner-ups. However, the girls squad did win the State Title in the 400-meter free relay, and Noah Fields is the State Champion in the 100-meter backstroke.

Turning to hoops on the hardcourt, on Friday, 2/15 the Bruton girls lost to Nottoway in the first round of the regional tournament by a 42-32 score. However, that same night the boys team, which had a losing 8-13 regular season record, pulled off a 70-56 home win over Arcadia. They will face Brunswick in the second round. Also that same night, the Poquoson boys won a first round game, 54-47 over Prince Edward County. Sadly that night the Poquoson girls lost a 27- 26 defensive squeaker to Brunswick. The Summit Christian Academy boys played the Friends school in Virginia Beach again, this time in an away tussle. Summit won this rematch by a 56-18 count. However, on St. Valentine's Day the team lost a heartbreaker 45-38 at home to Greenbrier Christian Academy. The girls lost at home on Monday, 2/11 to Broadwater Academy, who visited all the way from Exmore, by a respectable 46-34 count.

More titles may be on the way, as this upcoming week we have some local participants in the indoor track State Championships and the Scholastic Bowl. Stay tuned for further sports news!
