York County and Poquoson Weekly Sports Report
Special Season Recap
Submitted by John Hamilton

What a year it was for high school sports in York County and Poquoson! The fall, winter, and spring sports seasons may be over, but we can still look back fondly at all the accomplishments of our student-athletes. We had a lot of State Championship trophies to add to the cabinets this year.

To start with in the fall sports season, the Bruton girls field hockey team went only 2-13 in the regular season. However, they pulled off an exciting 5-0 shutout victory over Hopewell in the first round of the regional tournament. Kasandra Aulenbach of Tabb brought home the VHSL Cross Country State Championship. The Poquoson girls field hockey team made school history by competing in the field hockey final game, but lost an absolute 1-0 heartbreaker to James Monroe in a defensive battle. Amazingly, Tabb and York competed in semifinal games as well. The Poquoson boys football squad had a fine season, but missed a chance to play in the state semifinals when they lost 21-14 to undefeated Goochland.

On to the winter sports season, and the Poquoson wrestling dynasty found a way to win its 11th State Championship. In addition, Cole McCormick, Brett Poultney, and Karon Smith won individual titles. John Michael Cassidy of York won a State Championship too. In the pool, both the York girls and boys teams finished second place in the entire state of Virginia. Additionally, the York girls are your 400-meter relay State Champions, and Noah Fields is your 100-meter backstroke State Champion. In track and field, the Grafton girls won the Silver Medal in the 4 x 800 meter relay race. Meagan Turner, Tristan Harrison, and Nick Talati of Tabb all won individual State Championships in swimming. Zachary Coldsnow is again the State Champion in the shot put. The York girls are the State Champions in the 4 x 400 indoor relay. Joey Langston of York won the indoor 500 meter State Championship. York legend Ryah Hinds won State Championships in both the 55 meters and the 300 meters.

Lastly, we recap the spring sports season. The York girls won the Garvey Trophy to start out the soccer season. The Grafton boys track and field team won the Conn- Madden Relays, and the girls took home second place. In softball, the Tabb girls had a fine season, but were unable to repeat as State Champions. The Tabb boys are the outdoor track and field State Champions. Zachary Coldsnow and E.J. Bell won individual State Titles as well. Ryah Hinds of York won three outdoor State Championships for a second straight year, and the Bruton boys team of Case Jones, Joey Mahoney, Seth Shafer, and Josh Hamman are the 4 x 400 State Champions. The Poquoson girls and boys soccer teams made valiant runs, but eventually lost in state semifinal matches. Natasha Novak and Cassie Watts of York won the State Championship in doubles tennis. The Tabb boys baseball team had a magical run, only to lose a slugfest 16-10 in the state title game, as six seniors graduated on the field just minutes before the game. The Grafton girls lost 7-0 to Woodgrove to end their run in the state tournament.

We should note Summit Christian Academy fielded plenty of hard-working athletes for the three sports seasons as well.

Finally, let's not forget our talented mental athletes. The Tabb debate team brought home the VHSL Debate State Championship. Enjoy your summer, and in a couple of months we will see action in the fall sports season.
